Emmaus is a unique independent organization founded by Abbé Pierre in France I 1949. Emmaus tackles social exclusion through community living. It calls on people to take charge of their lives and work to support the community on ecological projects. Communities range from hous-es for victims of human trafficking in Bosnia, removal companies in Germany to apple farms in Belgium. Emmaus offers people a new start, a family, a bed and a reason to get out of it.

This series of photographs is a response to the intimate experience of living in and working alongside Emmaus community companions (residents) in Germany, Belgium, England, France, Holland, Italy, Sweden and Bosnia. ‘It is like having a jigsaw puzzle, taking all the pieces and finding the right way to put them together.’ Fred, Emmaus Langeweg Holland.
